I think it changes day to day, some days feel really difficult and others don’t. It’s definitely not an easy job but it’s rewarding and interesting.

I would not say in general it is not very hard. Some days/weeks are very busy and then I sometimes have to work in evenings or weekends, which is not always nice of course. But as as long as I do that to reach my goal and I like doing science, it doesn’t feel like very hard work!

Some days are more challenging than others! Even though something can be hard work, it won’t feel like hard work if you enjoy it.

That’s a tough question as everyone has more busy and stressful times and easy times. Personally I would say my work in science communication isn’t as hard as the rest of these guys who work in research as I don’t have the pressures of trying to find funding or having to publish new findings. But my work is still tough sometimes when the people I am doing work for are piling on the pressure for me to do a good job

I think this depends on the person – for me it’s a 7 at the moment but it changes. When I first started my PhD, it felt like a 10 because it was so new to me and working in a big place like a university can be confusing. I feel more comfortable the longer I’ve done something. When I get a new job or start a new project, it will get harder again.

Andrea Kusec answered on 4 Mar 2020:
Some days it’s a 1, and others it’s a 10! If I had to pick an average I’d pick 6 or 7 – new challenges come up everyday, but I feel that I can handle it!

Sarah Carter answered on 5 Mar 2020:
This definitely fluctuates. Right now, I’m at a pretty relaxed pace, with just a few projects to work on. Sometimes, I have a ton of things to do and lots of journal publishing deadlines to work toward and conferences to prepare for, and that can be very stressful. Ultimately, though, I am extremely lucky to have the job I have and try to remind myself of that when I’m feeling stressed.

Good question 👍
I’m not sure I can put on a scale because – I was always advised that if you do something you enjoy then you don’t mind the hard work.
I would say the work does vary but generally the hard parts are often the most interesting – as you have a problem and need to work out how to fix the problem 🙋

Sarah Clarke answered on 5 Mar 2020:
Its really variable…some days its a nice easy 1 because everything is going well and I have plenty of time, sometimes it feels like an 11 because I’ve got a load of deadlines all at the same time. But just because my job has hard times, doesn’t stop me wanting to do it – doing a job you enjoy helps you get through the hard times and I’m sure all jobs have hard times.

Sarah Brown answered on 5 Mar 2020:
Just like the others I would say this varies daily (or even hourly)! Right now I would put it at 6 however this time last week I would have told you 10.

Jennifer Roe answered on 5 Mar 2020:
that depends on how much work the scientists want to do. I am the person who actually does their experiments on the mice so if they want more experiments doing I try to fit them in where time allows. The busier they are the busier I am!

I think like a lot of people have said it changes daily. Overall I would say a 7?
-
Robyn Kiy answered on 6 Mar 2020:
I agree with the others, it definitely depends. Sometimes there is a lot of tricky work to do in a short amount of time, but other times there is a lot less to do. It probably averages out around a 7/10!

Samir Hopestone answered on 6 Mar 2020:
Depends on the day, some days feel like a 1 and others like a 10!
-
Ioana Grigoras answered on 6 Mar 2020:
Probably like a 7. There are easier days when I only have meetings and send emails, but then I also have days when I work very hard. It is particularly stressful when you have deadlines and need to make sure you finish your work by then.
-
Kate Mitchell answered on 8 Mar 2020:
It definitely varies for me too. I had to train for a long time to do it, which was hard work but really enjoyable. In my current job, I have to use my brain a lot to solve challenging problems, which is hard work but also enjoyable. And I often have to juggle different projects and priorities which is hard – but the projects are all exciting!

Oh that’s tough cause my days are definitely not the same! Some days it’s a 4 or 5. Lately it’s been a 9 but I know in another month or so it’ll drop down to a 7. So it definitely just changes day to day because so do the activities I do.
