I find mice interesting because their biology – including their genes, and their brain structure – is so similar to humans, that a lot of work we do with mice can be related to humans. For example my project is looking at mutations that are linked to schizophrenia in humans, and we introduce those mutations into the mice. We hope to prove that these mutations aren’t just linked to schizophrenia, but that they CAUSE schizophrenia (if that makes sense). We can then also tell what effect these mutations may have on specific behaviours, and brain structure, since mice are much simpler and easier to analyse than humans are.
