• Question: who inspired you?

      This is a really cool question! Two of my professors, one in Bucharest and one in Oxford, were a great inspiration to me. I remember having meetings with them and thinking that is who I want to be like when I ‘grow up’ (as a scientist). They are both remarkable, fierce and brilliant women, who are not just amazing scientists, but amazing people. Having both of them support and guide me in my career has changed my life. There are also two famous scientists that I have as role models: Marie Curie and Lise Meitner. They were both incredibly smart, curious, hard-working scientists and pioneers in their field.

      I dont have a very interesting answer to this one. There was never really one person that inspired me to go into science. It was just the subject that I loved the most and was always curious to learn and find out more, so I just wanted to do more of it. And thats how I got to where I am today I suppose. Although now, I am surrounded my many world-leading experts at work, and they are all really inspiring with the work they do. I have also gotten to know many different science communicators in the last few years – a few of which have become my role models now – people like Hannah Fry and Kat Arney.

      There isn’t just one answer to this question – lots of people have inspired me along the way and at different times. My teachers at school, my university lecturers, my parents, my colleagues…

      I love animals and I used to want to be a vet. I was inspired to study biology by David Attenborough because I watched loads of his documentaries when I was younger.

      I was inspired by people like David Attenborough and Steve Irwin, who with their love for animals managed to inspire so many people.

      To name a scientist, Marie Curie. I always admire her dedication and passion for science.
      To name a family member, my dad. He is a role model for me for his hard working and resilience.
      To name a fictional character, Sherlock Holmes. His persistence on uncovering the truth to satisfy his curiosity is a quality I really admire.
      And also, lots of footballers and teams. Through hundreds of games I learned to never give up. Everything can happen in football, just like everything can happen in science. 😉

      Such a good question because we all need inspiration 👍

      Outside of work I would be a bit boring and say my mum and dad. They always worked super hard to give opportunities to me, my brother and my sister – which always made me want to work hard back in return.

      In work – I used to work with a doctor who was super encouraging and always supported me to complete projects, and apply for things like presentations and prizes. I think this is really important to work with people who believe in you and encourage you to meet your potential 💯☑️

      So many teachers and lecturers inspired me through school and university! I don’t think that it’s just real people that inspire us though, so many characters from books and movies have inspired me to be who I am today.

      I was inspired to first study science by my high school science teacher, who was great – she encouraged us to be curious and ask lots of questions. And I’ve been inspired to work in the field I work in now by great teachers and lectures at university.

      My high school biology teacher. She is the reason I am where I am now. I even did my degree and PhD in the same university as she did!

      Many people along the way! When I was younger, I loved watching programmes by people like David Attenborough and Steve Backshall – I was amazed by how much they knew about animals and the Earth, and really wanted to know as much as them! As well as this, I was really lucky and had really great science teachers for my GCSEs, who encouraged me to find out more the areas that I was interested in. My family always encouraged me to keeping work hard, as well 🙂

      My parents always inspired me to just try my best at everything, to give everything a try and then follow my passions. Then during my masters year I met the woman who is now my supervisor and she made me believe that I could do it! 🙂
