When I started volunteering in a brain injury hospital, I became really interested in learning how to improve care. I was also volunteering in a research lab at the time, so decided to pair my interest in brain injury with my skillset as a researcher and just commit to working toward a career in science 🙂

I think for me it was my interest in biology that lead me here

I had a really great science teacher from Year 9 at high school who inspired me to keep studying science – she encouraged us to be curious and ask questions, even if she didn’t know the answer to them! Before that I thought science was all about learning facts, but that’s not being a scientist is like at all!

I work as a gastroenterology doctor (seeing patients with any tummy problems) 👍 I love seeing patients but wondered if there could be better treatments or better ways of helping people – and so got involved in clinical trials (which test new treatments to help people feel better)!

I didn’t want to be a scientist when I finished school. At the time, I wanted to become a doctor. I went to medical school for 6 years, and during that time, I also started working in a neuroscience lab. Then I realised that science wasn’t just reading and taking exams. It was being able to run your experiments, analysing data, presenting at conferences (and hanging out with other nerdy scientists). I enjoyed research more than clinical practice, so I decided to apply for postgraduate studies and become a scientist.

I always just enjoyed learning new things and solving problems and being a scientist you do these things every day. I don’t think I ever properly decided that I wanted to be a scientist – it just kind of happened! 😛 Another great thing about being a scientist is all the people you get to meet from all over the world!

I always loved learning about science and it was one of the subjects I was better at in school. So, I was just always curious to find out more and more as I have gone through my career to this point. I remember being in one biology lesson learning about genetics and just becoming hooked on molecular biology and the fact that all these molecules are moving around at lightning speeds in your cells to allow you to walk and talk and breathe and more. It just blew my mind
