      The virus is called SARS-CoV-2, the disease it causes is called COVID-19

      So there are several different coronaviruses which can infect humans, however the once causing the pandemic is called SARS-CoV-2. The first part comes from the type of illness it causes – Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The second bit is the type of virus CoronaVirus. And the final bit is because this virus is very similar to another coronavirus which caused SARS back in 2002/3 – thus this is the second (or number 2).
