Question: what is the funniest thing that has ever happened in work?

I really like it when all the people in my lab are in the office and one of us sends a funny gif or meme on the lab group chat and you can hear people starting checking their phones and giggling as they read it. You can also tell who is really focused on their work, because they’ll read it last!

My department puts on a panto in December every year – last year we did a Panto based on Frozen/The Snow Queen! It was hilarious – there was lots of live singing, and we changed the song “Do you want to build a snowman?” to “Do you want to Write a paper?” – below are some of our lyrics (they’re very science and research-specific…):
Do you want to write a paper?
Come on let’s go and write
I want to work some more
On our h-factor
To take our careers to new heights!You used to have ideas
But now you don’t
I wish you would tell me whyDo you want to write a paper?
It doesn’t have to be first author! -

My co-worker once left a glass flask heating in the microwave for too long – the microwave exploded and the flask literally flew across the room. It wouldn’t have been funny if someone had got hurt, but thankfully nobody did… it felt like one of those crazy scientist type moments!

I’m not sure how funny it is, but when I was doing research in the lab, I used to spend a lot of time in the dark room. I used it to develop some of my experiments, just like how photographers used to develop photos (you might have seen them in dark rooms with a red light in films – that was me doing my research). But I got locked in there once and was gone for a few hours before anyone noticed

I used to work at a tobacco company, researching the tobacco plant. I used to have to pick a lot of tobacco leaves, and one day I broke the rules and didn’t wear gloves (because it was so hot in the greenhouse). I forgot that nicotine can absorb through the skin, and after I picked leaves for about half an hour I went into the lab to work with them, and I realised I was very dizzy and was stumbling as I walked! While it was funny, it taught me an important lesson that we scientists often work with dangerous material, and it’s important to always wear your safety gear even if it’s uncomfortable!

The funniest thing was probably in my previous job, our boss was away so we put my mate on a trolley and rolled him down the corridor!

Hi. We organize these yearly group meetings where we present our research as well as have fun games. I think this combination of research, fun and team building is great to be part of.

One time I was chewing gum in the lab (which you really shouldn’t do and it was the only time I ever did it) and then I coughed and the gum flew out and got stuck in my hair… My friend laughed at me for about 10 minutes…
To be honest this is probably a better answer for a question like ‘What is the stupidest thing you’ve ever done in the lab?’ but oh well… -

My department had a competition where it was a different eating related challenge each week for example eating the most grapes in a minute, a watermelon with no hands, an ice-lolly the fastest etc. It was pretty funny 🙂 One challenge was eating a loaf of bread and some people decided it would be easier if they blended it with water…
