My job has busy times and quiet times. I find that the quiet times can be quite boring, so i would say i find that the hardest- waiting for work to come! I also dislike the commute, but that’s the way things are these days!

Samir and I work at the same place, so I would agree with him that the commute is a pain! I also get frustrated that some machines and equipment need to be booked, because they are used by so many people. I have to keep very organised!

Because I don’t do experiments and research anymore, but work in science communication, there are a lot of researchers who see me as a failure because I gave up on research, and they don’t treat me particularly nicely even though I have my researcher training and a PhD, so that sucks really.
Other than that, because I get to talk about so many different areas of research and there is only be to do it, sometimes I just cant cover it all. So, I hate not being able to cover someones research because ‘someone’ says it is not ‘impactful’ enough. Those researchers still worked really hard for years to discover that so I hate not being able to cover there work and feel like I am letting them down

A PhD is all about figuring things out – it’s hard because while you can ask people for advice, your research has to be new. Because nobody has done it before, sometimes I don’t know if what I’m doing is right, and a lot of the time I don’t know if it’s going to work. Sometimes I mess up or I don’t know the answer and it can be really hard.

The hardest thing about my job is deciding what to work on first. Sometimes, I’m working on a lot of different projects at the same time and have to filter through what is most important in order to focus and start making progress on any of them.

I agree with Katrina – it can be tricky when no one knows the right answer, because you’re the first person to try and find out what the answer is. This can be very frustrating at times, but it’s a great feeling when you finally figure something out (even if it’s a really tiny thing)!

When you do scientific research, your work gets looked at and commented on by lots of people before it gets published – this is really good for science, because it means that other experts check your work to make sure its been done well, but it can be quite hard to hear your work get criticised and not take it personally.

I think it would be the fact that theres a lot we dont know so I have to plan and figure out a lot. Its challenging but can be very exciting

Working with people means a lot of paperwork that can be pretty overwhelming – I just want to get right to the testing and analysing! So all of the approvals and regulations and the necessary work that needs to go into it can be hard.

Good question. Every job has its downside and things people find difficult or challenging. I agree with @Kate it can be hard to be openly criticised about you ideas. This is essential for good quality science but you need to develop a thick skin!
As a clinician the hours are long and you have to work weekends and night so this can be disruptive to your life and family. The end is in sight as when you are a very senior doctor you do less of this.
When thinking about a career its good to understand what would be hardest part and see if that is something you can manage. There are many highs too so they more than cancel the bits I dislike out!

I’m going to be boring and say nothing. I love seeing patients as a doctor and love working with patients in my research to try and get them feel better.
It’s a lot of work but if you do something you enjoy then it always feels like the hard work is worth it! 😎

There are a couple of things that can become frustrating, like always having to troubleshoot and having deadlines or sometimes your experiments just don’t work. But that is also what makes it so challenging and rewarding to figure it out!

The main thing I dislike about my job is debugging code! I do a lot of coding but sometimes when it is not working you have to spend a very long time going through each bit of code bit by bit and testing it – this can be very frustrating and boring!
