  Hi, thanks for your question.So the great thing about science is that there are so many different types of research! We don’t all work in a lab doing experiments (although I have done that in the past). At the moment I do my research using “data” so my time is mostly spent sitting at the computer, coding and crunching numbers. I have friends in zoology who are out in the fields catching or counting animals, friends in archaeology who are doing research in dig sites abroad, friends in engineering who work on formula 1 cars… Scientific research can cover a huge range of things so there is something for everyone!

  It is a lot of fun! I like to think of new experiments and doing them, and I’m always curious for the result. When I am doing experiments in the lab, most of the time one or more of my colleagues are doing there experiments to, and it is very nice to work together.

  I love working in a lab. It’s nice to work in a practical way, since I find sitting at a desk in front of a computer really boring! It can get a bit hot because you’re wearing a labcoat or jumpsuit to keep you safe, but its rewarding because you can often see results happening in front of your eyes as you work.

  I really loved working in the lab and I do miss it sometimes. It can be really tough sometimes when your experiments just don’t work and you have no idea why, especially when you have spent sometimes months preparing for it. But when you finally solve the problem and get it to work or make that exciting discovery it is all work it in the end.

  I work with people – so no one works with lab coats in my department, but we have some testing rooms (usually they look like small meeting rooms with a computer, where lots of tasks are run). Otherwise, I work in NHS clinics a lot! I love working in my department though – there are lots of people who provide support and it’s nice to get away from working at a computer!

  Experiments can be really cool – in many ways it’s a lot like school 👍
  
  You read about what you want to do and why it’s important, then you plan what you’re going to do and then do the experiment.
  
  Sometimes things work exactly as you planned and that’s really interesting but sometimes things go completely the opposite of what you thought – and in some ways that’s even cooler because you have to figure out why things didn’t “work” 😎 so it’s really fun and makes your brain work everyday!

  I don’t really work in a ‘normal’ lab, I work in an animal facility when I’m not at my computer. It’s a really interesting place to work and quite a unique environment!

  Its generally very white in laboratories. But with lots of stuff everywhere; machines, paperwork, computers, gadgets, pens (that go missing far to often!), wires, microscopes and busy people with lots of things going on. A busy place to work.

  I really enjoy it! I like having some practical work to break up long periods of desk work. It can be challenging to plan your own experiments, but it is very rewarding when things go to plan – or even when they don’t, but you discover something cool anyway!

  I think it is quite exciting and it is never boring! I like the days when I do experiments the best because I feel super productive 😀 You need to be organised, have an outline of the experiment you are doing and pay attention to every step.

  Not all scientists work in a lab – I haven’t been in a lab in over 10 years! I do my research at a computer, analysing data and running computer simulations. I wasn’t very good at doing lab experiments – I was a bit clumsy and slow! Now I run experiments on the computer instead.

  I would say that being in a lab doing experiments is busy and you have to be organised but it can be very enjoyable for some! Personally having experienced this for a year of my PhD, I much prefer sitting at my computer doing my maths and coding but that is just a personal preference and lots of my friends love the hands on nature of experiments in a lab.
