I think that I may have felt like it was at the time however overall it didn’t really. Part of becoming a good learner is being able to cope with some distractions now and then while also keeping yourself motivated and trying your best to always reach your own full potential.

It can be difficult to work while there are distractions. However, working in a busy environment is a great skill to learn and develop, so see it as part of your education!

Yes! I usually need quiet to be able to concentrate, so when others were chatting away or messing around, I couldnt concentrate. Plus then the teachers got distracted because they were trying to deal with these students and so maybe ran out of time to teach us everything we needed to know properly

I think so – I think I was particularly prone to distraction (I still am!) and working in a distracting environment is a skill I’m still developing. I remember it being hard when I was younger though! I would learn best if I just read in the quiet at home.

As you progress in life, you will realise there are ever-increasing sources of distractions, whether in class or elsewhere. Now past all the stages of education, I still find the life is full of distractions and distractors. Therefore, the key is to ignore those and learn how to stay focused on your tasks and goals.

Definitely. I am very easily distracted, even now, so have to work really hard at staying focused in loud/busy environments. I was always so impressed with people who could study in a library or with music on – I have to be home alone in silence to retain any information!

Sometimes our teachers would change what desks we sat at – who I was sitting beside definitely effected how much I worked. If I was ever worried about falling behind I would speak to my teacher. They reassured me that if I was just missing the odd question, I’d be able to catch up!

I have felt distracted by others in class, however it is important to learn to work with distractions as this is often how it is working in an office/lab. Its a good skill to gain.

I think I was able to block them out. People can always distract you, its about keeping focus

I think sometimes it felt that way in lessons, but I don’t think this impacted my learning overall. I usually find it easier to work with a bit of background noise though, so never minded a bit of talking in the background.
It’s good to find out what environments you work best in, so you can try and be in those settings to do revision and things like that. However, like everyone above has said, learning to overcome distractions is a great skill that you will use throughout your life, so try and look at the positives if you feel you are being distracted (even though it can be very annoying at the time!).

I actually need to work in an environment where I hear some sounds and voices. At my university, we had a silent study room in the library, but I was least productive there. Many labs and office spaces are a bit noisy, so it is good to get used to being productive in a noisy environment. However, I do tell my colleagues when they are really distracting me (for example when they put music on) and they are fine with that.

I think at the time I felt like it did but looking back I don’t think it had a huge impact. It might have just made me work harder at some things!

I remember finding it really frustrating at the time, but actually so much of your learning it down to the time and effort you put in yourself that I don’t think it had a massive impact when I look back. I do my research in a busy open plan office so it some ways its been good learning how to stay focussed on my work when there are distractions going on all around me!

Sometimes I think it did, but I was able to learn everything I needed to in the end. Being able to focus on my work for a good length of time is something I’m still learning to get better at – its a valuable skill to have!

I don’t remember being too distracted. I’d tell other children to shut up if they were too loud.

It’s kind of difficult to say – I guess when I was younger, I was usually the one distracting people and being a bit of a clown – after I decided I wanted to do medicine I worked a lot harder and stopped distracting others at school 👍 Took a while for me to realise what to do and knuckle down though 🙋

At the time I felt that class distractions were really effecting me but I look back now and it didn’t too much- a lot of it was down to my own determination and the time I took to self study. It can definitely be super annoying though! But it prepared me for working in distracting environments!
